Leadwork

Leadwork for Chimneys, Valleys and Flashings

Most roof leaks start at a junction: the joint between the roof and a wall, chimney stack, dormer cheek or neighbouring slope. Tiles and slates cannot close those joints on their own, so lead is worked by hand to fit each one, tucked into the masonry and lapped over the roof covering. New leadwork is the right call when lead has split, lifted or gone missing.

  • Lighter code for soakers, heavier for aprons and valleys
  • Short lengths with generous laps, so the lead can move
  • Copper clips and lead wedges, pointed into the chase
  • Patination oil to stop white streaks on tiles and render

FAQs

Leadwork FAQs

How do I know if my leadwork needs replacing?

Damp near chimney breasts or along walls where a roof abuts them, and white streaks on render or tiles below the lead, are common signs from inside and around the house. Splits, lifted edges and over-long pieces can only be confirmed up close, so we check the lead ourselves when we survey the roof before quoting.

Can you repair lead rather than replace it?

Sometimes. A lifted flashing with sound lead can be refixed and repointed, and a small split can occasionally be dealt with locally. Where the lead is thin, cracked in several places or fitted in over-long pieces, patches tend to fail again, so renewing that section is the sounder choice. Once we have seen it, we explain which applies.

How long does leadwork take?

Refixing a flashing can be a short job. Replacing all the lead around a chimney, or relining a valley, takes longer because the tiles or slates around it have to be lifted and relaid. If scaffolding is needed, it goes up first. You get a realistic idea of timing along with your quote.

What affects the price of leadwork?

The amount of lead, the code it needs to be, how easy it is to reach and whether anything underneath needs repair all count. A tall stack needing scaffolding costs more to get to than a porch roof. Your quote lists each lead position we are renewing, item by item, so nothing is left vague.

How do I get a quote for leadwork?

Ring us, or describe where the problem is on the quote form, adding photos if you have them. The survey and the quote are both free: we look at the roof first, then send a written quote setting out the work. We are fully insured, so you are not carrying the risk while we work at height on your property.
