New Roofs

Natural Slate Re-Roofing

Re-slating strips a slate roof, checks the timber sarking boards it is nailed to and relays it in natural slate. Slates often outlast the nails holding them, so it is usually the right call once rusted nails start letting slates slide down the roof, or when damp sarking shows water has been getting past the covering for some time.

  • Spanish slate on cost, Welsh where older houses need a match
  • Sound slates stripped by hand, sorted and reused
  • Correct head lap for the pitch, with nails or hooks
  • Rotten sarking cut out and replaced before slating starts

FAQs

Slate Roofs FAQs

Can my old slates be reused?

Often a good share of them can. Natural slate outlasts the nails holding it, so we strip carefully and check each slate for cracks, flaking and worn nail holes. Sound slates go back on, and new slate makes up the shortfall, chosen to sit well alongside the old.

What is sarking and why does it matter?

Sarking is the layer of timber boards fixed across the rafters that slates are nailed to on many Scottish roofs. It stiffens the roof and holds the fixings, so if boards have rotted, slates will not stay put. We renew rotten sections before the new slating goes on.

Is Welsh slate worth the extra over Spanish?

It depends on the house and your budget. Welsh slate has a distinctive colour and a long track record, and it can be the better match on an older property. Good quality Spanish slate is widely used and performs well. We explain the difference and give you our honest view for your roof.

How long does re-slating take?

Slating is slower than tiling because every slate is fixed individually, and sarking repairs can add time once the roof is open. We give you a realistic estimate for your roof when we quote, and keep you updated if the weather holds things up.

How do I get a quote for a slate roof?

Phone us or use the quote form and tell us a little about the roof. We come out to look at the slates and, where we can, at the sarking from inside the loft. The survey and the quote are free, and the quote gives our view on how much can be salvaged.
